My Philosophy of Teaching
I believe that learning mathematics is about more than solving problems-it's about developing clear thinking, confidence, and a deep appreciation for structure and logic. As a tutor, my role is to guide each student toward genuine understanding, helping them build both skill and self-belief.
I have experience working with a wide range of learners, including students on the autism spectrum, students who aim for top academic achievement, and students who need to rebuild foundational skills. I recognize that excellence comes in many forms, and I tailor my teaching to the individual-adapting my methods to support different learning styles, goals, and strengths.
My approach emphasizes not just how to do math, but why it works. I aim to foster what I call automatic intelligence-the ability to recall and apply core facts and procedures effortlessly-by ensuring that students first understand concepts deeply. With this foundation, fluency and confidence follow naturally.
Above all, I value patience, honesty, and persistence. Math can be challenging, and that’s part of its beauty. With the right support, every student can grow, achieve, and even come to enjoy the subject-whether they're catching up, reaching ahead, or exploring for the love of learning.
APPROACH
Teaching Methods
I don’t just show the student how to solve problems—I guide the student to discover the “why” behind each step. Through inquiry-based learning, I pose real questions and let the student explore different paths, so they build their own understanding and take ownership of their progress.
In our sessions, I use the Socratic method—asking the right questions at the right time—to help the student articulate their reasoning, spot hidden assumptions, and reach mathematical insights independently. It’s like having a conversation that sharpens their thinking.
Finally, I weave in spaced practice so we revisit concepts over days and weeks, not all at once. These quick, regular reviews lock ideas into the student’s long-term memory, so nothing slips through the cracks—and confidence lasts.
